Visiting International Olympic Committee Vice President Kevan Gosper spoke highly of Beijing's traffic management after visiting the Beijing Public Security Traffic Administration Bureau on Tuesday, saying, "You can always give me a surprise."
"I am satisfied with such a professional management run by a professional organization," Gosper said after the detailed introduction given by Piao Lu, a female police officer who speak standard and fluent English, about the effective traffic administrative system in Beijing.
Standing by a slide projector, Piao Lu, who has been engaged in Beijing's bidding for the 2008 Olympic Games, illustrated the traffic control, driver and vehicle management, and the advanced intelligent traffic management system in Beijing to Gosper who nodded his head now and then while listening.
Liu Qin, the expert at the research center of the traffic administration bureau, then gave a detailed introduction in fluent English about the traffic management plans for the 2008 Olympics and the 21st Universiade to be formally opened in Beijing on Wednesday.
Standing in front of the huge screen of the intelligent traffic control system which can simultaneously monitor the traffic flowing in 32 areas, Gosper stared at all the detailed images on the screen while listening to the introduction, saying, "I see", " Good" now and then.
Back to his seat, Gosper burst out the words "very impressive, congratulations."
Beijing's traffic management is as good as Sydney which hosted the 2000 Olympic Games, Gosper, an Australian, said. But Beijing is bigger than Sydney, which means more difficult to do a good job, he added.
Making a reminding, the vice president said to his experience, there may be something wrong after the opening of a big games even though a best plan has been made before it.
For instance, many drivers coming from other cities or provinces knew little about the traffic control situation in the host city and they might make trouble, he said, adding that this problem came out both in the Sydney and the Atlantic Olympic Games.
"Anyway, all of you here are experts and we rely on you," he said with a smile.
Welcoming Gosper to China after Beijing's successful bidding for the 2008 Olympics, Yu Chunquan, the deputy chief of the traffic administration bureau, said that everything ran smoothly so far and all his working staff are determined to try their best to guarantee the fluent traffic transportation during the Universiade to be held from August 22 to September 1.
Before leaving, Gosper left words on a hard-cover book, which says: "Congratulate for your excellent traffic transport plan for 2008 Olympics."
